Woodpeckers are representatives of the group of woodpeckers. They mainly live in wooded areas. There are about 220
species of woodpeckers, the sizes of which reach from 15 to 50 centimeters. The most common color of plumage is black, white,
red and yellow. Some species of woodpeckers are orange, green, brown, maroon. Woodpeckers move along the trunk of a tree
from bottom to top, helping itself with claws on its paws and tail, while the main load falls on the tail. Woodpeckers do not use a strong beak
only for obtaining food, but also for creating nests, which are usually arranged in the hollows of trees. Woodpeckers knock on wood and to communicate with each other
friend. The woodpecker is capable of striking wood at a speed of 25 times per second (which is almost twice the speed of a machine gun),
up to 12,000 times a day! Many woodpeckers have spiny tongues with which they reach out to beetles. Due to the huge energy consumption, the woodpecker constantly
is hungry. For example, a black woodpecker (native to North America) can eat 900 beetle larvae or 1000 ants in one sitting;
the green woodpecker eats up to 2,000 ants and insects from trees a day. Woodpeckers play an important role in insect control, help
limit the spread of tree diseases by eliminating disease vectors. Thus, this bird helps to conserve forests.
It is very easy to determine the gender of a woodpecker. Only in males the back of the neck is scarlet. Both sexes hatch eggs. 12 days
enough for hatching chicks. The average lifespan of a wild woodpecker can range from 4 to 11 years.
