The image of the Torre de Belém tower, fueled by the maritime romance, has long since become a symbol of Lisbon. The Torre de Belém Tower is a fortified structure (fort) on an island in the Tagus River in the district of the same name in Lisbon. Built in 1515-1521 by Francisco de Arruda in homage to Vasco da Gama's discovery of the sea route to India and served in turn as a small defensive fortress, deposit of gunpowder, prison and customs. In the 19th century, the monument became an object of interest and pride for Portuguese romantics, and a major restoration was carried out. In 1983, the tower and the neighboring Jerónimos Monastery were declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
